Shaped Snuff-box

1766-67
Gold, enamel, 3 x 7,8 x 6,4 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

This shaped snuff-box with an enamelled lid features a miniature after The Rest by Jean-Baptiste Greuze. Contrasting with the great vogue hitherto favouring Boucher, the scenes by Greuze, glorifying the nobility of family virtues and the gravity of simple joys, became widely popular in the last third of the eighteenth century. The box is attributed to Jean-Marie Tiron (1748-1481).
