Octagonal vase

1680-85
Polychrome faience, height 75 cm
Musée de la Chartreuse, Douai

This octagonal vase was made in the Delft pottery 'Het Jonge/Oude Moriaenshoofd' run by the widow of Wemmers Hoppesteyn and her son Rochus. The design is a Chinese scene as viewed through the eyes of a Dutchman. The exuberant, multicoloured decoration refers to Chinese examples.
