CASTELLO, Italian family of artists in Genoa

The painter Bernardo Castello (1557-1629) was the brother of the goldsmith and illuminator Giovanni Battista Castello (1547-1637) and the sculptor Pietro Castello (active 1582-1592), both of whom worked for Philip II in Spain, and the father of the more famous painter Valerio Castello (1624-1659). This family has no relations with another Castello family active in Genoa and Spain of which the most important member was Giovanni Battista Castello (c. 1509-1569), called Il Bergamasco.
