This painting, depicting Courbet's sisters, Zoé, Zélie and Juliette giving alms to a girl cowherd, belongs to Courbet's realist works which earned him the soubriquet of the "Watteau of the ugly" from Théophile Gautier. It was exhibited at the Salon of 1852 and was bought by the duc de Morny, half-brother to Napoleon III.
