CRANACH, Lucas the Younger
(b. 1515, Wittenberg, d. 1586, Weimar)

Portrait of Martin Luther on his Deathbed

1546
Oil and tempera on wood
Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum, Hannover

The painting is based on the authentic drawing by Lukas Furtenagel, who was summoned from Halle to paint the deceased Reformer on his deathbed. This drawing reached the Cranach workshop shortly after Luther's death.

The painting in Hanover is thought to be the earliest and certainly the finest of all the surviving versions, and it reflects the serenity of Luther's death.
