FERRUCCI, Italian family of artists

Members of the family came from Fiesole and were active in Tuscany and elsewhere in Italy from the 15th century to the 17th. The most distinguished were the sculptor Francesco di Simone Ferrucci (1437-1493), the sculptor and architect Andrea di Piero Ferrucci (1465-c. 1526) and the sculptor Francesco di Giovanni Ferrucci (1495-1585). Francesco di Simone was an eclectic artist who never developed a stable style of his own. He was an accomplished stone-carver and elegant decorator but lacked a sure grasp of figure construction. A skilful carver, Andrea di Piero's speciality lay in large marble complexes combining architecture, statues and reliefs. As an architect he worked on Florence Cathedral, of which he was capomaestro from 1512 until his death. Francesco devoted himself to porphyry-carving, mostly working for the Medici family.
