Judith with the Head of Holofernes

1600
Oil on canvas, 130 x 110 cm
Museo Davia Bargellini, Bologna

The physiognomy of Judith and the maid servant has lead scholars to believe that the two figures are portraits, and several theories have emerged as to the identity of the women. It is even suggested that the figure of Judith is a self-portrait. The painting demonstrates Fontana's inventiveness through the use of dynamic theatrical effects, and it reveals the quality her mature style.
