Expulsion of Joachim from the Temple (north wall, detail)

1365
Fresco
Rinuccini Chapel, Santa Croce, Florence

The male and female figures in the two outer side aisles of the five-aisle hall where the main scene is set, flank the centre of the composition like an honour guard, assume an expectant posture. The first row on the right has women dressed like brides. They draw the viewer's gaze away from the other figures not only with their radiant, youthful appearance but also thanks to their clothing, whose elegance is clearly derived from contemporary fashions.
