GIOVANNI DA MILANO
(active 1350-69, Milano, Firenze)

Meeting of Joachim and Anne at the Golden Gate (north wall, detail)

1365
Fresco
Rinuccini Chapel, Santa Croce, Florence

The scenes depicting Joachim's dream and the meeting at the Golden Gate shows that Giovanni da Milano was influenced by Taddeo Gaddi. Details such as the prominently placed servant in Joachim's entourage who carries on his shoulder a basket on a pole while leading a dog on a leash demonstrate unmistakably that Giovanni studied Gaddi's corresponding frescoes of the Baroncelli Chapel.
