Early paintings (Nuenen, 1884-85)
by Vincent van GOGH

Van Gogh stayed at the Nuenen vicarage with his parents longer than at any single place in his entire life as an artist. Here he could devote himself entirely to painting, using oil on canvas, which he had previously been unable to effort. He tried to perfect his command on the three types of picture he had hitherto been concentrating on: stll-lifes, landscapes and genre paintings.

Working on various series at the same time, he used up all the suitable subjects he could find around the village where his parents were living. During the first year at Nuenen he produced a number of everyday scenes from the life of weavers, paintings of the surrounding countryside, and a number of still-lifes.
