HALS, Dirck
(b. 1591, Haarlem, d. 1656, Haarlem)

Woman Tearing a Letter

1631
Oil on panel, 45 x 55 cm
Mittelrheinisches Landesmuseum, Mainz

Dirck Hals is considered as a follower of his more talented brother, Frans. However, this painting demonstrates his occasional ability to scale great artistic height. It is remarkable both for the rendering an expansive yet plausible space and for the extremely restricted colour range of ochers, browns, and olives, applied with fairly broad brushwork, of a type associated with Frans Hals in particular and Haarlem art in general.
