The Museum Stairway1817
Watercolour, 86 x 66 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris
When exhibited at the Salon of 1817, this impressively large-format watercolour received critical acclaim for the accuracy of its execution and the sensitive choice of colours. The picture offers a glimpse of the monumental stairway built in 1812, which led to the Apollo Rotunda and the Salon Carré of the Musée du Louvre. The stairway was demolished in 1855.
