In his formative years López y Portaña Vicente specialised chiefly in religious painting and later he became established as one of the leading portrait painters of his day. He married Maria Piquer and had two sons, Bernardo (1801-1874) and Luis (1802-1865) López y Piquer, both of whom became artists.
