LORENZETTI, Pietro
(b. ca. 1280, Siena, d. 1348, Siena)

Madonna with St Francis and St John the Evangelist

c. 1320
Fresco
Lower Church, San Francesco, Assisi

This lyrical picture - located in the south arm of the western transept below the great Crucifixion scene - is one the earliest example of the Santa Conversazione. The visionary half-length apparitions rise up from behind a stone ledge, set against the infinite gold beyond.

Below, on the narrow predella the Crucifix in golden background can be seen between the coat-of-arms of the Orsini Family. On the right is the profile portrait of the donor. On the left probably a woman portrait has been lost.
