A Young Witch

15th century
Oil on panel
Staatliche Museen, Leipzig

Witchcraft was a practice in the Middle Ages which involved contact with the devil and was universally condemned. The present Flemish panel represents magic at its most banal. A young witch has used her powers to cast a love-spell on the youth who enters at the back.
