POTTER, Paulus
(b. 1625, Enkhuizen, d. 1654, Amsterdam)

Horsemen near a Barn

1646
Black and white chalk on buff-coloured paper, 170 x 130 mm
Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt

This subject is familiar from the works of other Dutch artists active in the 1640s, particularly Pieter van Laer. But Potter's drawing stands apart in its quality of light: it is the intense, picturesque daylight of the late afternoon, an effect achieved mostly by heightening in white chalk. This sheet was intended as a finished work of art made for independent sale.
