PYNAS, Dutch family of painters

The brothers Jan Pynas and Jacob Pynas came from an aristocratic Catholic family in Alkmaar; their father, Symon Jansz. Brouwer, became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1590. Their sister Meynsge married the artist Jan Tengnagel in 1611. Until the 1930s the oeuvres of the two brothers were often confused and also generally subsumed in the category of works by followers of Adam Elsheimer.
