Luca della Robbia's Madonna images were very popular in religious circles. They were appreciated for their qualities of brilliance and whiteness, alluding to purity and spiritual light. Well known examples are the Madonna della Mela (Madonna of the Apple) and the Madonna del Roseto (Madonna in a Rose-Garden).
