The Ratification of the Treaty of Münster, 15 May 1648

The independence of the Netherlands was recognised by the Treaty of Munster which was signed between the Dutch and the Spanish in 1648. The treaty, result of long negotiation put an end to the Eighty Years' War on the 18th of June, 1648. The ratification took place in the council chamber of Münster town hall. Gerard Terborch was present and he commemorated the event by this painting.
