Portrait of an Anatomist

1670-72
Pen and brown ink, brush and gray ink, 220 x 203 mm
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam

This sheet is undoubtedly a compositional study. It may be a portrait of a Delft doctor and anatomist, Reiner de Graaf (1641-1673), who introduced Van Leeuwenhook to the Royal Society of London. De Graaf conducted extensive research on the pancreas and the reproductive organs.
