The most important genre painter in Delft after the death of Vermeer was Johannes Verkolje. Unlike Vermeer, he left a considerable number of drawings. He prepared both his portraits and his genre paintings with compositional drawings, of which Elegant Company Making Music on a Terrace is a characteristic example. This freehand sketch anticipates his painting of the same title at Castle Wörlitz, near Dessau.
