The Triumph of Virtue over Vice

1554-56
Oil on canvas, 295 x 165 cm
Palazzo Ducale, Venice

This painting is on the ceiling of the Sala del Consiglio dei Dieci in the Palazzo Ducale.

Laurel wreath and palm bough indicate that the brilliantly weighted Virtue has triumphed over Vice. As with all the other ceiling paintings in the rooms of the Council of Ten, the Triumph of Virtue over Vice has a strongly moralizing tone. Like mute admonitions, the paintings remind the Council of Ten as guardians of order and decency of one of their main tasks - fighting vice.
