WEENIX, Dutch family of artists

The architect Johannes Weenix had four children: a son Jan Baptist Weenix, who became a painter, and three daughters, the youngest of whom, Lijsbeth, married the painter Barent Micker (1615–87), whose brother Jan Christiaensz. Micker (c. 1598–1664) was probably Jan Baptist's first teacher in Amsterdam. In 1639 Jan Baptist, who specialized in painting Dutch Italianate landscapes and harbour views, married Justina d'Hondecoeter, daughter of the landscape painter Gillis d'Hondecoeter, sister of Gysbert (1604–53) and Niclaes (1607/8–42), both also landscape painters, and aunt of Melchior d'Hondecoeter. They had two children: Jan Weenix, who became a still-life, landscape and portrait painter, and Gillis Weenix, about whom little is known.
