Heinrich Suzo: De Scientia

c. 1334
Manuscript (MS IV III)
Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique, Brussels

This codex is on of the three illustrated vernacular manuscripts of Suzo's work. It contains a lavishly illustrated cycle of images, produced for a patron with expensive taste.

The miniature on folio 13v shows an exhibition of 14th-century clocks. The two characters are the Dominican author, Heinrich Suzo (c. 1295-1366), and Lady Wisdom. The clocks, from left to right, are an astrolabe, a clock which chimes the hour by pulling a rope running through the ceiling, a large mechanical clock with five bells and four smaller clocks on the table.
