Guillaume de Machaut: Poetical Works

1355-60
Manuscript (Ms. français 1586), 300 x 210 mm (folio size)
Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

The most famous miniature in this manuscript is the "Mysterious Garden" on folio 103r, in which Machaut meets a lion, the symbol of the true lover. This cheerful nature scene is regarded as one of the oldest real landscape studies in the history of European art.
