Roman de Girart de Roussillon

1450s
Manuscript (Cod. 2549), 395 x 300 mm
Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Vienna

On the presentation page of the manuscript, Jean Wauquelin present a volume of courtly romance to Philip the Bold. The duke is dressed in an expensive black fur-trimmed cloak and wears the collar of the Golden Fleece. Court dignitaries surround Philip, with his son Charles on his immediate left. The vibrancy of the detailed scene conveys the splendour of the Burgundian court.

The design of the miniature is in the style of Rogier van der Weyden.
