Gospel Lectionary

1450s
Manuscript (cat. no. 187)
Musée Marmottan, Paris

This unusually grand Gospel Lectionary was made in the southern Netherlands early in the second half of the fifteenth century. The miniature shown here illustrates the text of St Luke's Gospel, chapter 19, when, despite murmurs of disapproval from the bystanders, Christ dined at the house of Zacchaeus the publican, who stood up during the meal and offered to give half his wealth to the poor.
