Last Judgment

11th century
Mosaic
Santa Maria Assunta, Torcello

The majority of the existing Last Judgment mosaic of exceptional iconographic completeness on the west wall of the nave were conceived between the mid and late eleventh century by Byzantine craftsmen close to a Greek monastic tradition that was far from the courtly art of Constantinople. However, some parts of the Judgment were carried out toward the end of the following century by Greek and Venetian craftsmen who were decorating San Marco.
