A strict formalism distinguishes German Romanesque wall painting of the eleventh and twelfth centuries in stylistic terms from that of other European countries. Many examples of frescoes survived from several artistic centres. The towns which extend along the Lower Rhine valley as far as Westphalia make up one of the main centres. The frescoes in Knechsteden Abbey (German: Kloster Knechtsteden) a former Premonstratensian abbey in Dormagen in North Rhine-Westphalia are related to this centre.
