Wall Tiles with Soldier Figures

c. 1650
Tin-glazed earthenware, painted in cobalt blue, 12,6 x 12,6 x 0,7 cm
Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest

Each of the square white wall tiles displays an energetically, but somewhat sketchily painted soldier, depicted after the compositions of Jacob de Gheyn II's series of prints published for the training of the military. De Gheyn's sheets document the handling of arms by the different branches of the Dutch regular army of his time.
