LUYCKX, Christiaen
(b. 1623, Antwerpen, d. after 1657)

Biography

Flemish painter. One of the most accomplished seventeenth-century Flemish still-life painters, Christiaen Luyckx remains overshadowed by some of his contemporaries. Many of his works have long passed under the names of other artists, such as Jan Davidsz. de Heem.

A native of Antwerp, Luyckx studied under Philippe de Marlier (c. 1600-c. 1668) from 1639 to 1642. The artist made a brief journey to Lille in 1644, but was back in Antwerp by 1645, when he married and became master in the Guild of Saint Luke. In a document of 1646, Luyckx is designated having been 'in the service of His Majesty the King of Spain'. There is no further archival mention of the artist after the baptism of a son in 1653.
