The painting is one of the eight panels of an altarpiece by the Budapest Master: The Betrayal of Christ, The Crucifixion, the Lamentation and two Holy Bishops in Budapest, the Annunciation, the Last Supper and Ascencion in different private collections. The background of the Crucifixion is of Franco-Flemish character the castle in its center symbolizes Jerusalem and Bethlehem. The figures of Mary, St John and mary Magdalene can be compared with contemporary Flemish paintings.
