Peasants Bowling in a Village Street

c. 1650
Oil on panel, 34 x 47 cm
Private collection

On a street in front of a house and its outbuildings six peasants are actively involved in a game of bowls, the object of which, then as now, is to get one's own bowl nearest a marker set in the ground. Three have already thrown and wait tensely on a bench by the marker for the fourth man to throw. He is already crouched and his bright red cap makes him the focus of attention in this work. Beside him stand the next two players, each holding their bowl.
