The Temptation of Christ

1579-81
Oil on canvas, 539 x 330 cm
Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice

This painting is on the wall of the Sala Superiore.

Like any self-respecting hermit, Christ in the desert is tempted by gluttony and lust, proffered on this occasion by a demon that has tried unsuccessfully to disguise itself with spongy wings. There is a lively dialogue between Christ, who is seated at the top right under the rustic and disjointed roof, and the young handsome devil who breaks in from the bottom offering two loaves of bread.
