ANGELICO, Fra
(b. ca. 1400, Vicchio nell Mugello, d. 1455, Roma)

Presentation of Jesus in the Temple (Cell 10)

1440-42
Fresco, 171 x 116 cm
Convento di San Marco, Florence

This is the fresco on the wall of Cell 10 of the Convento di San Marco in Florence: St Peter Martyr and the Blessed Villana of the Dominican Order contemplate the three other figures of the Evangelical story.

Along with his assistants, Fra Angelico decorated the vast convent of San Marco with frescoes. For the more public rooms, the painter produced rather festive and elaborate representations, but for the private cells where the paintings were the objects of the monks' contemplation, the frescoes were more spare and ethereal, painted with restrained colour.
