BARBARI, Jacopo de'
(b. ca. 1445, Venezia, d. 1516, Bruxelles)

Portrait of a Man

1505-06
Oil on linden panel, 38 x 30 cm
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

This painting dates to about 1505-06, when Jacopo was working in Wittenberg for the dukes of Saxony. The portrait reflects the strong influence of Dürer, but its monochrome colour scheme - dark gray cap and coat against a dark background - is unlike anything in Italy or Germany at the beginning of the sixteenth century.
