The detail shows the kneeleing figure of St Bernard. In the immediate foreground is a trompe l'oeil picture, made more convincing by the open book which leans against it. It is a motif worthy of Fra Bartolomeo's predecessor at the Dominican convent of San Marco, Fra Angelico.
