Olympus: The Fall of the Giants

1764
Oil on canvas, 68 x 123 cm
Museo del Prado, Madrid

Bayeu was the most important painter to follow in Mengs's footsteps. He was Goya's brother-in-law and the author of some notable frescoes both in his native city Zaragoza and in Toledo, the Royal Palace of Madrid, and other royal residences.

This painting is a sketch for a ceiling fresco in the Royal Palace in Madrid. It represents the Gigantomachia, the primordial battle between the gods (the Giants or the Gigants) at the Olympus.
