BELLINI, Gentile
(b. ca. 1429, Venezia, d. 1507, Venezia)

Self-Portrait

c. 1496
Charcoal on paper, 23 x 194 mm
Staatliche Museen, Berlin

The subject of this drawing was identified as Gentile Bellini. The portrait was incorporated into his monumental painting Procession in Piazza San Marco, where Gentile can be seen to the left of the processional canopy, apparently next to the figure of his brother, Giovanni. However, the attribution is disputed, Giovanni Bellini was also proposed as the possible author of the drawing.
