BERNERO, Giovanni Battista
(b. 1736, Cavallerleone, d. 1796, Torino)

Orion

c. 1770
Marble, life-size
Stupinigi, Turin

Bernero was a pupil of the Collino brothers in Turin. He executed between 1769 and 1772 a graceful suite of marble figures for the royal hunting lodge at Stupinigi. The figures celebrate mythological figures associated with the hunt.

Orion typifies Bernero's independent stance towards the Classical models he studied in Rome.
