The Virgin's head is the apex of the painting's perspective, but the flowered axis from a tree to the child's genitals makes a connection from the Tree of the Garden of Eden - and the wood of the Cross believed to be made of it - and the Incarnation. Roundels like this one were often given as childbirth gift called 'deschi da parto."
