Design for sculpture

1661
Drawing
Municipal Archive, Amsterdam

Salomon de Bray's last major architectural commission was the renovation of the Prinsenhof in Amsterdam for the Admiralty in 1661. There is only one signed drawing by him with a design for sculpture of the fronton. The Admiralty evidently wanted a sculpture in the classical style, like those that could be seen in the frontons of the Town Hall. The carving was carried out by Jan Gijseling the Elder, though he only followed the main lines of De Bray's sketch.
