Cantoria

1480s
Marble
Cappella Sistina, Vatican

The cantoria or little cloisters' gallery comprises a niche set into the right wall of the Sistine Chapel measuring some 5 by 2 meters. It is fitted with a coffered ceiling and elaborate balustrade in marble. Here set the 'cantori' (choristers), usually twelve in number, who accompanied the liturgical ceremonies.

The cantoria was executed in collaboration with Mino da Fiesole and Giovanni Dalmata.
