BREGNO, Andrea
(b. 1418, Osteno, d. 1503, Roma)

Cardinal Raffaele Sansoni Riario

c. 1478
Marble, formerly partially gilded, height 57 cm
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston

Andrea Bregno produced two busts of Cardinal Riario (1460-1521), the builder of the Palazzo della Cancellaria in Rome and the patron of the young Michelangelo. The terracotta version, now in Berlin, was a preparatory for the marble version, now in Boston. However, the attribution is not certain, the terracotta piece was also assigned to Benedetto da Maiano, the marble bust first to Verrocchio, and now in the Boston museum to an anonymous Italian artist of the early sixteenth century.
