BREGNO, Andrea
(b. 1418, Osteno, d. 1503, Roma)

Monument to Cardinal Cristoforo della Rovere

c. 1479
Marble
Cappella della Rovere, Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome

Dated works by Andrea Bregno are the monument to Cardinal Cristoforo della Rovere and Cardinal Domenico della Rovere (d. 1478 and 1501 respectively) in Santa Maria del Popolo, on which Mino da Fiesole also worked.

The tomb of Cardinal Cristoforo della Rovere, the Bishop of Tarentaise is one of the best 15th century sculpted funeral monuments in Rome. It is the work of Andrea Bregno but the relief of the Virgin and the Child in the lunette is attributed to Mino da Fiesole. According to the inscription the tomb was prepared by Domenico della Rovere for his brother and himself.

The other tomb in the chapel (on the right) is the sepulchre of Cardinal Giovanni da Castro who died in 1506. Francesco Sangallo's 16th century work is sometimes compared unfavourably to the superb Della Rovere monument.

On the altar in the centre is Pinturicchio's Adoration of the Christ Child.
