Angel of the Annunciation

1450s
Istrian stone, height, 143 cm
Victoria and Albert Museum, London

The use of Istrian stone for this Annunciation figure and its style indicates that it was created in the Veneto region (encompassing the Adriatic coast) and may have adorned the exterior portal of a church. Together with the figure of the Virgin on the other side of the doorway, this represents the moment when the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the son of God.
