Façade with Loggia

Ospedale del Ceppo, Pistoia

The Renaissance arcaded loggia, inspired by the Ospedale degli Innocenti at Florence, was added to the 13th-century hospital building in 1502. It is decorated by a glazed terracotta frieze executed by Santi Buglioni from 1525 onwards; it depicts the seven acts of mercy, with scenes separated by the representations of the Virtues. The tondoes on the façade, executed by Giovanni della Robbia in 1525, represent the Annunciation, the Virgin in Glory, the Visitation, and the Medici coat of arms.
