Fountain of the Dwarf Pietro Barbino

1561-68
Marble
Galleria Palatina (Palazzo Pitti), Florence

This grotesque fountain is also known as "Il Morgante" or "Bacchino." Because of his nudity and potbellied shape, the figure is sometimes identified as Bacchus. However, this is certainly a portrait of Pietro Barbino, known as Il Morgante, the famous dwarf of the sixteenth century, who lived at the court of Cosimo I de' Medici. The statue, a Medici commission, was only later adapted as a fountain.
