Portrait of Claude of Lorraine, Duke of Guise

Oil on wood, 29 x 26 cm
Galleria Palatina (Palazzo Pitti), Florence

Appearing more courtier than warrior, the handsome double duke was a fierce soldier and a nobleman aggressive about his rights of precedence. For his loyalty to his king, François I, he was raised from count to duke of Guise in 1528.
