CRANACH, Lucas the Elder
(b. 1472, Kronach, d. 1553, Weimar)

Study of a Stag (recto)

Brush drawing with watercolour over black chalk, 135 x 167 mm
J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

This is the only surviving sheet from Cranach's workshop to show animals painted in watercolour on both sides of the sheet. It may have come from a lost sketchbook.

The stag on the recto can be related to the walking stag towards the right edge of the Golden Age in Munich.
